A former railway line in Spen could be developed into a 'safe route to school', following investigations by Kirklees Highways Services.
Chairman of the Environment and Transportation Management Board, Councillor Martyn Bolt, is urging people to tell the Council what they think about the idea.
The proposed route centres on the disused line between Rawfolds in Liversedge, and Heckmondwike.
Coun Bolt said the route could be developed as a footpath into Heckmondwike.
"The route passes close to three local primary schools - Little-town, Millbridge, and Holy Spirit, and Heckmondwike Grammar School," he said.
"It also passes under the main A62 Leeds Road where there is a demand for two crossing patrols.
"If this route could be developed it would fit in with the 'safe routes to school' initiative and provide pedestrian access to established and newly-opened shopping areas of Heckmondwike."
He said the route would enable people to walk and cycle to other local amenities, such as Royds Park and Spenborough Pool.
Coun Bolt said: "Local views are important and I would urge people to contact myself, highways officers or local councillors."
