A MOBILE library service which acts as a lifeline for older residents could find its service reduced, villagers fear.

A deputation to a recent Pool Parish Council by resident Bernard Mitchinson said that there was concern in the village that the service may be lost and has come up with alternative proposals.

He told the meeting: "I visited the mobile library and enjoyed an interesting talk with the staff. I was concerned when they advised me that because of the low use, the service may be reduced at the next review.

"I suggested that the Church Lane venue could be usefully transferred to the car park

adjacent to the school with the obvious benefits. Staff were most enthusiastic and supportive.

"I believe they would adjust their stock to suit their clients and increased demand may

justify the large van service.

"There is a waiting list for the mobile library services and action on this matter needs to be

immediate."

Parish councillors agreed to write to the city council to clarify the situation and has suggested a revised rota - but they encouraged villagers to use the service or lose it.

Pool 2020 community group, which Mr Mitchinson chairs, supports the proposals.

The current service is fortnightly at Old Pool Bank Village Hall and Warren Lane in Arthington, and weekly in Church Lane in Pool and Wharfedale Court.

Leisure Services has currently made no decision on the future of the service.
