Bulls coach Brian Noble has emerged as the front-runner to take charge of Great Britain in three years' time.
It follows the Odsal stalwart's appointment as assistant to new Great Britain coach David Waite.
Another former Great Britain international, Castleford's Graham Steadman, has also joined the backroom coaching staff ahead of the Ashes series against Australia this autumn.
Both are part-time appointments that will enable Noble and Steadman to continue their roles at their respective Super League clubs.
Australian Waite has a three-year deal and at the end of it the RFL are keen to replace him with a home-grown coach.
Greg McCallum, the Rugby Football League's director of rugby, said: "This is continuing evidence that we are grooming British-born coaches to operate at the highest level of the game.
"Both men have proved their worth at Super League level and have demonstrated that they have great potential at international level."
