A freephone number has been introduced to help farmers, and other businesses and their employees, who have been hit financially by the epidemic. The helpline -- 0800 138 1647 (1-8pm weekdays) -- has been introduced by the National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux (NACAB).
An e-mail advice service -- ruralemergencycab@nacab.org.uk -- is also available.
NACAB chief executive David Harker said: "Our rural Citizens Advice Bureaux have been working hard to cope with the problems arising from the foot and mouth outbreak, and they have reported a huge need for money advice during what is a desperate financial crisis for many in the countryside.
"We are providing free, independent and confidential money advice for farmers, associated suppliers, farm workers, haulage companies, those involved in tourism, shopkeepers and other small businesses, to help them ride the crisis."
