Brewer David Atkinson was fond of boasting how he could take on any of the dare-devil stunts on ITV's popular Don't Try This At Home show.
Little did he realise that as he scoffed, his ever-patient wife, mother-of-five Rosie, was scheming.
The result was David, 32, having to face a gut churning challenge to abseil headfirst off the edge of the 3,000 foot high Table Mountain, in South Africa.
Rosie, 45, recalled: "Every Saturday he'd sit there saying 'I could do that' whenever any of the stunts were on, so I decided to test him."
She wrote to the programme organisers, who visited Goose Eye Brewery, in Keighley, which David runs with his dad Jack, posing as real ale fanatics to test whether the place was suitable for filming programme presenter Davina McCall's surprise visit.
"David had no idea what was happening until she arrived. He was absolutely shocked," said Rosie.
"I'd even had to keep quiet at home while he was boasting knowing that he was going on a challenge," she said.
Even when the couple made the trip to South Africa a few weeks later, David was still in the dark about what exactly the challenge was.
"It was only when we were up the mountain I was told what I had to do. They said I had to abseil off, but with a difference -- head first," he said.
"I'd only ever abseiled once before, in the Scouts at Buckden, when I was a kid.
"They put a harness on me -- I didn't get any instructions and I must have asked them 12 times if the harness was safe.
"I had hold of a rope in front of me and I was told to walk to the edge. It was a nightmare looking over the cliff into an abyss," he said.
Rosie added: "I was very nervous and I wished I'd never arranged it."
At home in Keighley was David's mum, Linda, and dad, Jack, who suffers from vertigo.
"Jack was sick when I told him what David was doing. He doesn't even like driving across bridges or going in a plane," said Linda.
And did David do it?
Well everyone can see if he had the courage of his convictions by tuning in to the show on Saturday, April 28.
And people can help celebrate his attempt by supping a new Goose Eye beer, especially brewed to commemorate the challenge.
"We've called it Dope on a Rope because they gave me a T-shirt with that logo written on it," added David.
