There is no shortage of people in Bradford who are prepared to volunteer their time and energy to help others. Most of their efforts go unsung, partly because they are not the sort of people to shout about what they do.
Despite their modesty, though, they merit the recognition of the rest of the community. It is volunteers who help to keep the caring side of our society functioning.
Whether they are checking up on an elderly neighbour on a daily basis, working in a charity shop two days a month, raising funds for a whole range of good causes or chairing a committee to try to get a new community centre built, their contributions are vital.
That is particularly the case when there is ever-greater pressure on the resources available to the authorities to carry out these functions. Society depends on people who are able and willing to show commitment and to work hard for no reward other than the knowledge that they are making an important contribution to the well-being of others.
Our Bradford's Best campaign a couple of years ago unearthed many of these unsung heroes. Now the planned Bradford celebration in June to mark the International Year of Volunteers will once again turn the spotlight on them. The range and scope of volunteering in Bradford is illustrated by the fact that 60 local voluntary groups will be represented.
People are now being urged to nominate those who they feel have made a significant difference to the lives of others. Let's hope the response is good. They fully deserve Bradford's thanks.
