Dougie Lampkin won the opening round of the World Trials Championship in Spain last weekend - when he had to contend with ice and snow.

Spanish star Amos Bilbao crashed out of the trial at the fourth section when his machine plunged off a rocky section, fell down a cliff face and into a swollen river over 10 feet deep.

The machine was recovered on Saturday night as the snow fall turned into a total blizzard and the temperature plunged.

On Sunday three sections were axed and five others altered because of the icy conditions, but Lampkin again blazed a victory trail on the easier and shorter course.

He came under pressure from Graham Jarvis and top Spanish contender David Cobos on the first lap, but Lampkin fired back on lap two as the sections dried out slightly.

The best Spaniard was Marc Freixa in fifth spot. Ben Hemingway failed to score in his first world championship trial this year but he posted a warning with twenty first and twentieth in the overall results.
