Plans to demolish a former vicarage and pub in Liversedge to make way for 23 houses have been deferred by Kirklees Council.

BK Designs wants to demolish the Shoulder of Mutton pub in Halifax Road, Hightown, to build homes - which include six town houses.

The application was discussed at the Council's Heavy Woollen sub-committee meeting but deferred for a site visit by councillors and planning officers.

BK Designs applied in November to demolish the buildings next to 556 Halifax Road in Hightown.

A senior historic buildings officer inspected the pub in December and reported that it was not listable, because it was of little architectural interest.

Three letters of objection to the plans were received, including one from the Spen Valley Civic Society.

Society members fear the houses will mean the loss of trees, bushes and wildlife and cause an increase in traffic volume and noise. They also feel the space is not large enough for 23 houses and said they would not fit in with surrounding buildings.

Councillors will visit the site before making a decision on May 17.
