Traders have been warned to look out for counterfeit Scottish £20 notes.
Five shops in Cleckheaton have already been duped into accepting them.
At the Spenborough Chamber of Trade's meeting yesterday, PC Penny Ayers, Cleckheaton town centre community bobby, said the notes were circulating in the area.
"Five shops took them in good faith and are now £100 down," she said.
"They are the wrong colour, very blurred because they are printed on laser paper, and very waxy.
"Part of the problem is that we don't know what Scottish currency looks like."
She said a suspect had been caught on camera and inquiries were being made to catch him.
She said that generally crime in Cleckheaton town centre had risen, with 95 crimes in April compared to 82 last year.
Car crime had pushed figures up this month. Two cars were stolen and four thefts from cars recorded.
There were also several burglaries in the town centre, including £135 being stolen from the Kirkwood Hospice Shop, mobile phones stolen from Lord's Photography and £800 stolen from another shop.
Tesco and Booze Busters were also targeted by thieves who took bottles of alcohol.
