STEPS are being taken to extend Guiseley Cemetery by more than five acres.
The council says burial space at the cemetery will run out in two years unless more space is made available.
The cemetery, off Chevin End Road, will be extended into fields in three directions - if planning permission is given - and will take place in three stages.
A spokesman for Leeds City Council's leisure services department said: "Leeds Leisure Services plan to extend Guiseley Cemetery into the adjoining fields to the north, south and west, adding a further 2.23 hectares to the current area.
"It is intended to carry out the development work in three stages corresponding with the three fields surrounding it.
"The cemetery currently has burial space to last another two years and we are looking ahead to
provide the provision of burial space and meeting the needs of the community by undertaking this development.
"Space in cemeteries is an issue facing all local authorities and this is why we have drawn up a 50 year strategy which will take place with appropriate groups in the city including community involvement teams, as part of the consultation process."
