THIS was the amazing scene on top of the Chevin this week as dawn broke on May Day.
The rising of the sun was
celebrated in traditional English fashion by Morris dancers at the unearthly hour of 4am. Members of Otley Wayzgoose and the Buttercross Belles got up specially early on Tuesday morning for the traditional start of the Morris dancing season.
It had been thought that the recently revived tradition would have to be cancelled - because of the closure of the Chevin due to the foot and mouth crisis.
But following the reopening of the footpaths, the traditional 'dancing in' of the dawn was able to take place.
Later in the day, the two Morris 'sides' decorated the maypole in Manchester Square, Cross Green, Otley, and danced in the evening in the Market Place and outside the Bowling Green, in
Bondgate.
