POLICE are investigating the death of a 20-year-old Cross Hills man who was knocked down on Friday evening.
Shocked motorists called police after seeing a man walking on the busy A629 Skipton to Cross Hills Road.
Officers were on their way to the scene when Gareth Butterfield, of Ash Street, was in collision with a Nissan Micra close to the Kildwick roundabout.
The driver, who has not been named, was from the Silsden area, and was taken to Airedale Hospital, Steeton, suffering from shock.
He has not been charged with any offence.
Sgt Brian Trickett said an investigation had been launched into why Mr Butterfield was walking in the carriageway after being dropped off at the roundabout.
He said the accident occurred at around 11.10pm and police wanted to speak to any witnesses who had not yet come forward.
Sgt Trickett said he believed other vehicles might have been involved, but added that a lorry seen at the crash site was not involved.
It had parked across the road to protect the scene.
Anyone with information should phone 01423 539464 and leave their name, address and phone number for the attention of traffic constable Andy Stow or Sergeant Brian Trickett.
