Bramley...............24

Otley Tongans..10

OTLEY Tongans made a bright start at the Warrels but failed to take advantage of two clear cut chances. They eventually broke the deadlock when leading try scorer Tim Westlake-Bryant drifted inside to take the ball and power over.

Bramley started to run the ball and their fly-half, who had an excellent game, raced through to score a converted try and quickly followed this with a drop goal to stretch the lead.

Tongans were happy with a five point deficit facing the wind but in the closing minutes of the half they conceded two tries with basic mistakes. Both tries were converted to give the home side a 24-5 lead leaving Tongans with a mountain to climb.

They set to the task with a will but Bramley had their tails up sensing victory and were tackling strongly. Even when they looked to have got the speedy Craig Jackson clear Bramley managed to get the cover across. Pressure told as Otley won a five metre line-out and Grant Mitchell forced his way over. The conversion was missed and with time running out they never looked likely to score the 14 points required as they committed too many errors under pressure.

This was an unfortunate end to what has been an excellent season for the Tongans in which they have won 20 games, drawn two and lost four scoring 800 points against 258.

The injured Nick Girling was left frustrated on the touchline in his last game as skipper. The team raced back to Cross Green to join the Viscounts who had also planned an early kick-off to support the first team but their opposition failed to appear.

Other quarter-final results in the Aire-Wharfe Cup, sponsored by Sulzer Roteq Services (uk) Leeds, were: Wharfedale 39 Skipton 0, Old Otliensians 21 Yarnbury 21 (Otliensians go through on try count), Baildon 12 Bradford Salem 23.

The semi-final draw to be played by May 3 is - Wharfedale v Old Otliensians, Bramley Phoenix v Bradford Salem.
