A Bradford businesswoman is appealing to traders to give a village market another go.

Mandy Clark has been given the thumbs up by Bradford Council to hold 14 markets in Idle. But the first one was a flop when just three traders turned up.

Now Mrs Clark, 34, who runs Big and Beautiful in The Green, is urging people to support the venture and book places for the next one.

"The whole aim of the market is to give the village a boost and to let residents buy the things they need on their doorstep," said Mrs Clark.

"The first one was a fiasco and I was very disappointed after the hard work I'd put in.

"But I don't want to give up yet - I want to put Idle back on the map and show people it's a good place to shop."

Mrs Clark said lots of businesses had shut down, such as Keighley's the butcher's shop which closed last month, and residents tended to go out of the village to do their shopping at a supermarket.

"But there are lots of older residents who would benefit from a market on The Green," she added.

"If we don't do something now we'll run the risk of losing all our businesses and it's such a lovely village it would be a shame to let it all fall by the wayside."

She said an organic farmer was keen to take part in the next market and hoped other stalls selling cheeses, bread and crafts would also be on offer.

Marion Dyer, who runs Idle Aromatherapy in Albion Road, said she was one of the three traders who turned up at the last market.

"A lot of traders didn't come because just days before The Green was dug up by Transco and maybe they presumed it wouldn't go ahead," she said. "If it was held again I would definitely take part."

The market has also been given the support of Idle Community Council.

Mrs Clark is planning the next one for Thursday, May 24, and traders will be given a free site. Places can be booked on (01274) 424648.
