Millionaire Sharif Tariq wants to build Bradford's first Asian-Chinese restaurant near his Cannon Mills shopping complex.

Mr Tariq says the cuisine is now hugely popular in Pakistan and he believes it will take off in Bradford and the rest of Britain.

Mr Tariq has applied for planning permission for the £750,000 site in Great Horton Road and officers are recommending members of Bradford's Area Planning Panel should approve it when they meet next Thursday.

The building, which would include a function room, offices and 100 car parking spaces, would be built next to 424, Great Horton Road. The site is currently used for workshops and car sales.

It is close to the Cannon Mills complex, which is also set for a £15 million redevelopment.

The new restaurant would be in an area which already contains a number of curry restaurants but Mr Tariq says he does not think the businesses will compete because of the different types of food they would serve.

Mr Tariq, who also developed Keighley's Cavendish shopping centre, is going into the restaurant business for the first time and intends to operate the new venture himself.

He said: "It will be one of the first brand new, purpose-built restaurant in Bradford. We would like it to be open by the end of this year or early next year."

Officers will tell the panel next week that the design of the building "has its own integrity" and is an acceptable building in its surroundings.

They say the function room is only expected to operate in late afternoons and early evenings.

They recommend members to put limits on opening times including opening the restaurant from 7.30pm to midnight and the function room from 4.30pm to 10.30pm.

Mr Tariq already has planning permission for the redevelopment of Cannon Mills into a centre which will provide shops, a health club, wedding centre and 15 homes.

The proposals would create 250 jobs and renovate the Victorian structure.

He has now submitted a planning application for a temporary building to re-house existing traders while the work is being carried out.
