A bizarre second frame was the main talking point of the Derek Seabrook Bradford Snooker Pairs final at Lilycroft WMC.

Holders Wayne Cooper and Kevin Firth (Chapel Green Libs) had taken the first frame 74-17, Firth making a break of 48, when he laid a snooker behind the yellow.

Howard Mawson (Regal) was snookered on all 15 reds, and hit the pink. The referee called a miss, and Mawson made the same error a further seven times in giving away 52 points. His partner Chris Metcalfe then gave away eight points, meaning that Cooper and Firth led 60-0 without potting a ball!

Mawson and Metcalfe then scored 37 before Cooper had a break of 44 and Firth one of 36 as they took an astonishing frame 140-43.

"I have never come across a situation like that in my life," admitted Firth. "I laid the snooker behind the yellow, but it wasn't right behind it. Howard could play a shot off two cushions easily, but he kept hitting the same spot on the cushion each time and the shot was drifting away. He didn't adjust his shot enough. I said to Wayne as the frame went on 'You play the next shot as a matter of sportsmanship', but then Howard hit a red!"

The third frame was soon over 74-16, Cooper making an excellent break of 74 to seal their record third successive triumph and a record fourth in all.

Mawson and Metcalfe defeated Shab Ditta and John Cervi (Cuedos) 3-0 in their delayed semi-final at Lidget Green Con Club. Mawson potted the black to give the Regal duo the first 66-59, and made a fine 50 break in the second, which they won 55-13.

The third frame was close at 39-25 to singles semi-finalist Ditta and Cervi before Mawson fired in a 42 break to help them take it 76-42.

Cooper plays his singles final tomorrow against Matthew Holt (Idle CC) at Lilycroft WMC (7.45).

Railway Social Club, who had a 50-point advantage on the handicap, won the Hey's Trophy Team final 767-510.
