THE BID to set up a parish council for Aireborough has been revived by the area's community involvement team.
Aireborough CIT has called two public meetings to discuss residents' views on forming the area's own council, and is to set up a new petition. Members feel a parish council could give residents greater influencing in decisions made over provision of services, planning, and other issues in the area.
Councillor Graham Latty (Con, Aireborough) said: "What we should get across is what a parish council could do for the area. The biggest thing is public representation and pressure, that's what it is really for."
Any community wishing to set up a new parish council must collect the signatures of 10 per cent of the electorate, which will then be sent to Leeds City Council.
Coun Latty has been collecting signatures on a petition calling for a parish council for four years.
But the CIT has decided to start a new petition, as many people who signed the original document may have moved from the area. Petition forms will be distributed among local organisations by members of Aireborough CIT.
CIT member Elaine Parker said they would have to look into issues such as the individual identities of Yeadon, Guiseley and Rawdon.
Coun Latty said he had considered setting up separate committees for Yeadon, Guiseley and Rawdon within a parish council.
The first public meeting to hear public views on the formation of a parish council was expected to take place last night in Yeadon. A second meeting is scheduled at Yeadon Town Hall on May 23.
