THE focal point of Yeadon could be in line for a revamp in a bid to regenerate the town centre and boost trade.

Yeadon Town Hall Square has been spotlighted by Aireborough Community Involvement Team for work to improve the area's appearance and encourage more trade.

The CIT is now discussing ways of improving the appearance of the square, ranging from restoring the frontage of Yeadon Library, to make it blend in the other buildings, to changes to the market.

Ward councillor and member of the CIT, Moira Dunn, (Lab, Aireborough), said improving the square was something the councillors had been looking into for some time.

She said: "We would like to uplift the square. It is one of our treasures. People feel very proud to have the town square."

Coun Dunn said she would like to see frontage material removed to show the original stonework of the library building.

Other improvements the CIT is investigating include improved lighting in the area, installing flower planters and fitting CCTV cameras in the square to improve community safety.

The future of a public toilet block in the square is being looked into, and a review of traffic routes and car parking in the square is expected to be carried out by Leeds City Council highways officers.

CIT co-ordinator Jonathan Kerr said: "We've had about two meetings so far to identify what the issues are. We're at the idea stage really. It was talked very much about building Yeadon's confidence. We hope it would have a benefit to the local economy."

Handling the refurbishment of the square has been placed on the CIT's 2001-2002 action plan for the area. Mr Kerr said some minor improvements are likely to be carried out this financial year, but there could be a long-term redevelopment of the square.
