A leading councillor is calling for the boundaries of Calder-dale and Kirklees to be altered to help to ease traffic congestion on a busy road.

Coun Martyn Bolt (Con, Mirfield), chairman of Kirklees Environment and Transport-ation Management Board, wants a solution to the constant traffic problems at the Cooper Bridge roundabout.

He is calling for one of the roads leading up to the roundabout - the feeder road to the M62 motorway - to be switched from the Calderdale boundary to Kirklees because he claims Calderdale Council lacks interest in the issue.

"There is tremendous congestion on the roads that lead to the roundabout, but once you get through it the congestion all but disappears," he said. One of the busiest elements of congestion was traffic coming from, and queuing back to, the M62.

"Calderdale Council is aware of the problems but the route is not of the same strategic or political importance for them as it is for Kirklees," he said. "Consequently, while they will assist in any study, it is not a high priority for investigation.

"It is of such great importance to Kirklees that I will be asking what potential there is for pressing the Boundary Commission to change the boundaries so as to bring the motorway feeder road into Kirklees. Then Kirklees could look at sorting out the problems."

Coun Geoff Wainwright (Con, Skircoat), chairman of Calder-dale Council's regeneration and development scrutiny committee which is responsible for highways, said: "I think it's a sensible idea and that the majority of people would be in favour of it.

"The boundary runs through the middle of the very busy roundabout and Kirklees maintain the traffic signals we put up."
