A 22-year-old man was sent to jail for five years after a Court heard how he and his father carried out an absolutely appalling attack on a woman after enticing her into their car.
Stephen and Barrie Ruxton who had a catalogue of criminal convictions between them offered her a lift to a Bradford nightclub but instead drove to an isolated spot nearby where she was severely beaten and robbed of her jewellery.
Barrie Ruxton, of Maudsley Street, Bradford, who had been released from jail just weeks earlier, threatened to cut the rings from her fingers, Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday.
He admitted charges of robbery and assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and was jailed for five years.
His father, Stephen Ruxton, 42, of Sewell Road, Laisterdyke, admitted assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. His Honour Judge McCallam sentenced him to a two-year probation order and 100 hours of community service.
There were angry scenes as he walked free from court, with one woman shouting from the public gallery: That is disgusting. Why should Barrie take the blame for him?
Roger Thomas QC, prosecuting, said the victim was wearing a very large amount of jewellery as she went for a night out on April 22 last year. The gold rings, necklaces and bracelets were worth several thousand pounds.
After visiting a number of pubs, she went to the West End bar in Lumb Lane where Barrie and Stephen Ruxton had been drinking heavily.
Both spoke to her and when the bar closed, the victim waited outside for a taxi to take her to the Boilerhouse nightclub in Cheapside, the court heard.
There she saw the Ruxtons again, Stephen driving a white Austin Montego with Barrie in the back.
Barrie opened the door and offered her a lift and finally she accepted that offer, said Mr Thomas. But instead of stopping at the club, the car carried on, the court heard. The victim realised this and said: You've driven past it. She tried the door handle to escape but it didn't open, the court was told.
It was then that Stephen launched into his vicious attack. He punched her in the face causing her nose to bleed, said Mr Thomas. He continued hitting her as the car drove into Little Germany, to a spot which was deserted and very quiet.
In Little Germany she was punched further by Barrie Ruxton and there was an attempt to take rings from her fingers, said Mr Thomas.
He added: There was then a threat to have the rings cut off and at that, she succumbed to have them released.
The pair then dragged her out of the car where Barrie continued to beat her.
Mr Thomas said: She summoned up enough energy to flee from the scene but left a shoe in the car and another at the scene. The terrified victim, bruised and bleeding, called 999 from a telephone box.
Referring to Stephen, the Judge said he had great reservations about his account of his involvement. But, he said, Barrie had taken sole responsibility for the injuries sustained in the absolutely appalling attack.
