Only hours after Coun Eddie Newby, of Bradford, announced his resignation as leader of West Yorkshire County Council, the controlling Labour group met to choose his successor. The job has gone to Leeds University lecturer, Coun. Ken Woolmer, the deputy leader, who has been acting leader since January. Coun. Newby decided to resign because the hearing of alleged corruption and conspiracy charges against him has not yet been fixed. He was remanded on bail from Bradford City Court in March.

Famous names in radio appeared on a first class variety bill at the Alhambra, Bradford. Max Wall, whose dry brand of humour is lightened by moments of brilliant madness and eccentric dancing, heads the comedy. Semprini the pianist has a polished style, and Lester Ferguson's singing of romantic melodies pleased the audience. Others on the bill are Helga Barry, an original impressionist, Alan Kay and Gloria with a clever balancing act, and Iris Sadler, a saucy comedienne.
