TOURIST officers have come under fire after a walker looking for a map of Otley Chevin drew a blank.
John Morgan, of St Richard's Road, was first met with confused looks when he asked for the newly published orienteering map at the tourist office in Otley Library.
He went next door to the council's One Stop Shop in Boroughgate and was sent back to the tourist office - to be told he could pick one of the maps up at the ranger's office - on Otley Chevin.
"If I was a stranger in town I wouldn't even know where the ranger's office is, and anyway, he's never in because he's always out on the Chevin," said Mr Morgan.
Mr Morgan, former chairman of Otley Sports Council, added: "They didn't have a clue what I was talking about and it was only when I said I'd go to the 'Wharfedale' that they seemed bothered.
"People just don't want a half-pot tourist information office."
A spokesman for Leeds City Council's leisure services department said: "Otley Tourist Information Centre and library and information services are still continually improving their services since they combined earlier this year, and will endeavour to stock all relevant literature and materials.
"We do not currently stock copies of the most up to date orienteering map of Otley Chevin as it is a new publication, but we are evaluating the range of saleable items we can stock.
"We do have copies of the Forest Park Guide and The Chevin Area footpath map and guide.
"In the meantime, people and ramblers can obtain a copy of the new orienteering map of Otley Chevin from the ranger at the Chevin's Danefield estate and from Manor Books in Otley."
