The planned closure of Bradford's local taxation office is causing headaches for some of the city's 100,000 drivers. Records at the centre in Hall Ings are being sent to the new Driver Vehicle Licensing Centre, in Swansea. In its hey-day, Bradford handled 100,000 driving licences and 72,000 vehicle licences. In the next two years the Bradford office will shut down and, in the meantime, the changeover is causing problems.

The issue to conductors of an intricate new ticket machine, each one costing about £50, has made it possible for the West Yorkshire Road Car Co Ltd to enforce a regulation whereby 'workman return tickets' can only be used on the day of issue. An official said: "Previously we had no check on whether a person used it on the day it was issued. The new machine actually dates the ticket."
