A disturbing Bradford-based documentary following a heroin addict's battle through "cold turkey" was being screened on television tonight.
The programme focuses on Lanr Fehintola as he locks himself in a Bradford flat and attempts to battle through the torment of forced withdrawal.
The whole ordeal, which sees him wracked with the mental and physical pain of giving up the highly addictive drug, is filmed by his friend and award-winning film maker Leo Regan.
Mr Fehintola, a photo-journalist from Bradford, had immersed himself in the world of drugs to help him write a book on the subject.
A spokesman for Channel 4 said: "Lanr paid a high price for authenticity when he became a heroin addict himself.
"Despite planning a short-term addiction and quick withdrawal, six years after embarking on the project, Lanr was still using heroin and crack cocaine - he had become a character in his own story."
Mr Fehintola, a convicted robber and a former dealer, has already written a book on the subject called "Charlie says... don't get high on your own supply".
He featured in a film highlighting an earlier and unsuccessful attempt at coming off drugs.
Cold Turkey will be screened on Channel 4 at 10.55pm tonight.
