Bradford musician and conductor Rino Grice wants the district to have its own major orchestra as part of its bid to become European Capital of Culture.
He wants a symphony orchestra on the scale of the famous Halle Orchestra, to showcase local talent and perform both in the region and across the country.
The Halle has built a special relationship with Bradford Council, as the resident orchestra in its classical concert series. The Halle's residency in Bradford forms part of the orchestra's policy of developing links with non-Manchester audiences.
"Manchester's Halle Orchestra already makes so many appearances in Bradford that it has become known as 'Bradford's own'," said Rino.
"It seems that more importance is placed on getting a high-profile orchestra to play here than actually trying to produce our own.
"There is a wealth of musical talent in Bradford and it's time there was a proper showcase for that.
"When Glasgow was bidding to be City of Culture it already had a well established orchestra.
"We should be showing that we have the same kind of talent. Music should be an integral part of any culture bid."
As well as calling for a major orchestra, Rino is trying to set up an amateur orchestra.
He aims to draw on his experiences of putting a Bradford orchestra together for a New Year's Eve concert in the city.
The concert, held at St Mary's Church, featured performances from children's theatre group Stage 84.
Now Rino wants to hear from anyone interested in joining an amateur orchestra.
"I'm looking for people who haven't forgotten why they started playing music," he said.
"They must want to play for fun, but also be willing to make a serious commitment to monthly rehearsals and regular performances.
"There are amateur orchestras in other areas of the district, but nothing towards the city."
Anyone interested in joining an amateur orchestra should contact Rino on (01535) 275558.
