DEMONSTRATORS who took to an Ilkley street armed with placards in a bid to slow down traffic have promised a repeat performance of their 'silent' protest.
Rush-hour drivers looked on in surprise at the 25 members of Ilkley Community Against Speeding who lined Bolling Road on Friday morning, holding aloft 30mph signs.
Now - after a mostly favourable reaction from motorists - the group has promised to stage more protests on roads throughout the town.
"It really had a salutary effect," said ICAS member Barbara Davy, of Parklands. "People really did slow down. It's not lasting, we know that, but at least we are making people think about their speed."
She said only two drivers had responded negatively to the demonstration.
"The response from motorists was very encouraging. Many of them slowed down and a significant number signalled their approval of our action with a cheerful wave or thumbs up.
"We don't want to create any antagonism - we want their support."
Parents walking their children to school had, she said, stopped to offer support and thank the group for its actions.
ICAS met on Monday to discuss plans for more early-morning demonstrations, likely to be held on Wells Road, Leeds Road and Cowpasture Road.
