A storming second nine by Robert Hillas gave him his first major Bradford Union competition win at South Bradford.

The 17-year-old son of Northcliffe professional Mick Hillas reached the turn in two over in the Clubman's Championship, which had been switched from Baildon because the course is still closed following the foot and mouth outbreak.

But eight pars and one birdie on the final nine holes gave the Northcliffe youngster a one-over- par total of 71 and left him three shots clear of the field.

Hillas has been in good form this year and has cut his handicap from seven to five since the entry date closed.

Normally he would not have been eligible for the contest, which is open to those with handicaps from six to 12.

Runners-up slot went to The Manor's Paul Carass on 74 thanks to a better back nine of 34.

He edged Clayton's Bruce MacDonald into third place, with Skipton's Adrian Robertson taking fourth on 75 and South Bradford's Gary Birch fifth with 76.
