Manager Jim Jefferies is planning talks with Stuart McCall's advisers next week to discuss a new one-year contract.

McCall is still unsure about his Bradford City future, but Jefferies said: "Stuart's advisers put some counter proposals to us. Things are not set in stone and we will be negotiating.

"He has got an offer which is most of the basic wage he was on when he first came here three years ago. We are negotiating with his advisers and hope to put one or two things to them that will encourage Stuart to stay."

Burnley have been monitoring the situation since McCall voiced his discontent about a possible 60 per cent drop in salary. And other clubs are known to be interested with at least one offer of a coaching role.

Chairman Geoffrey Richmond's decision to raise the bar on next season's wage budget to £7.5 million has given Jefferies some leeway to try to keep the out-of-contract players like Eoin Jess and Robert Molenaar.

But McCall, whose agent is currently stalling his potential suitors, is heading off for a sunshine break still in the dark.

He said: "Bradford City had a new offer put to them last Friday and they got back to my solicitor yesterday. At the moment, I'm in a situation of not knowing what's going to happen.

"I want to get it sorted out but until they get back to me, then I can't make any decisions."

It is understood that one of the options put forward on McCall's behalf was the prospect of a money-spinning testimonial match at Valley Parade, possibly against his old club Rangers.

Jefferies said: "We plan to see him very shortly and I can confirm that a testimonial is one idea that they have asked for.

"We still have to discuss it with Stuart but there is a very distinct possibility that it will be allowed. I see Stuart playing a part in the squad next year, but he is 37 next birthday and, with the best will in the world and the biggest heart, which he has, it's going to be hard for him to play in all the games."

Jefferies added: "With the increase in the budget, it gives us a wee bit of strength to negotiate with some of the players out of contract. And as the budget stands, there is even room to bring in a couple of players without anybody else going.

"I have spoken to Jess's agent and I am hopeful I can set up a meeting with him."
