If Pavarotti was to appear in Bradford, it would be nice to think that he could find a hotel in the city to meet his expectations. The "Pavarotti factor" suggested by David Scougall, the member of the British Urban Regeneration Association with a special interest in West Yorkshire, is an interesting concept.
Certainly the city should be able to offer top-of-the-range accommodation to discerning people with lots of money. If the bid for Capital of Culture status succeeds, that will be an even more important consideration.
But the Pavarottis of this world are few and far between. The hotels to suit their tastes and pockets need to be part of a package which offers a good mix across the whole price range.
David Scougall is right that we don't have enough top-notch accommodation, but neither do we have enough middle-of-the-range rooms for all those people who would want to visit the city to see Pavarotti.
Of course, the other interesting question this debate opens up is - where would Pavarotti perform if he came here? That again points to the fact that Bradford needs a quality concert hall and entertainment venue to enable it to attract some of the bigger names from the world of music.
A much better plan for the site of the former Odeon would be a venue where an orchestra like the Halle could be invited to take up residence in the city, thereby putting Bradford on the international arts calendar at a stroke in much the same way as Sir Simon Rattle's CBSO did for Birmingham.
And what a contribution to our Capital of Culture bid that would be!
