A quick-thinking young boy saved the life of his mum when a fire broke out in their Keighley home.
Ten-year-old Andrew Steele and his mum Tracey had a lucky escape when the ground floor of their Second Avenue home in Ingrow was totally destroyed by fire.
After discovering the blaze, Andrew ran upstairs to wake his mum to get her out of the house and used valuable fire safety measures to ensure their escape.
Andrew had been watching cartoons in his bedroom, but when he decided to go down stairs to watch television he was confronted with a fire in the living room.
Andrew, a pupil at Nessfield Primary School, said: "I went downstairs and saw the fire, I closed the door and ran up to tell my mum. I felt the door, like the fireman told us to do at school and it was cold, but when I came back down it was really getting hot.
"There was more smoke in the room and I was a bit scared. We ran past the fire and got out. One good thing is my mum won't have to do the housework now."
Andrew's heroic actions were praised by his mum.
Tracey, 35, a lunch time supervisor at Nessfield Primary School, said: "I was in bed and he came and told me there was a fire.
"I didn't really believe him, I thought he was joking. I ran down the stairs and filled the mop bucket with water, but the fire was too bad.
"We had to run past it, as it was the only way out. I would not have got out if he hadn't have got me. The neighbours were great giving us clothes and drinks. Andrew was absolutely wonderful."
The fire, which happened on Friday morning, was attended my two fire engines and took 45 minutes to put out.
Station Officer Ronnie Barker, at Keighley Fire Station, said: "They had a lucky escape. They managed to get out before it got fully engulfed in fire. The house is now uninhabitable.
"They didn't have a smoke detector. If they had had a smoke detector it would have been better and given them vital seconds.
"We have been going around schools giving talks on the importance of having them and Andrew recognised me from it. I said to him do you understand now."
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.
