A Steeton horse owner has praised the actions of two Keighley policemen after they helped to save the life of her horse.

Rebecca Smith was woken in the early hours on Wednesday last week to the news that one of her horses had been involved in a terrible accident.

A taxi driver and two policemen, PC Greg McArthur and PC Richard Leonard, had found the injured animal on a road in Steeton and quickly called out a horse surgeon to attend to it.

The horse, called Annie, appeared to have been frightened whilst grazing in her field, causing her to ram an electric fence, bolt through a stone wall, fall four feet onto a road and then gallop several miles along it.

When she was found, she was suffering from severe internal injuries and a large open wound on her chest. She was lucky not to have been hit by any traffic.

A local farmer told the police who owned horses in the area and they were quickly able to locate Rebecca.

With the help of the two policemen, Rebecca and the vet were able to guide the horse, called Annie, onto a trailer so she could be taken to the vets in Keighley to be operated on.

Rebecca, 24, said: "The police were so good, they were picking grass for her, they were extremely good. They helped me to put the horse in the box, I can't thank them all enough for their help."

Annie, a six-year-old show horse, will be in recovery for about six months.
