The jury in the trial of a man shot dead has been sent out to decide on the future of five men.

The jury of seven women and five men were sent out by the Honourable Mr Justice Grigson at 3.25pm yesterday and called back in 50 minutes later to retire for the day.

They have sat through five weeks and a day's worth of evidence at Leeds Crown Court relating to the killing of Dexter Coleman in Bradford on July 14 last year.

On his final day of summing up Mr Grigson went through the evidence given during the trial - including the history of the man accused of killing Mr Coleman, 25-year-old Safdar Khan of Tile Street, Girlington.

Mr Coleman - also known as Dexter or X - was shot near The Young Lion Caf in Lumb Lane after disturbances involving a number of youths.

The jury heard how Khan did not originally tell the police where he was on the night of the killing because he was with his girlfriend in Bierley and not with his wife and family.

But the hearing also heard that Khan told police he had no problems with the Afro- Caribbean community and had been to the Young Lion Caf, a focal point for much of the night's trouble, on many occasions.

Earlier in the day Mr Grigson warned the jurors they had to decide whether some of the evidence given had been fabricated by witnesses.

He referred to two witnesses, Mohammed Aktar Ayaz and Howard Smith, also known as Metro.

The judge told the jury: "Does his (Mr Smith's) account tally with that of Mohammed Ayaz? Is it true or have they put their heads together to come up with some corrupt account?"

Mr Smith earlier told the hearing how he had been chased by Asian youths until one of them had urged the attackers to stop.

In summing up, Mr Grigson reminded the court how witnesses said Mr Coleman had been shot while running towards the Young Lion Caf, which had then been pelted with bricks and stones.

Safdar Khan, 23, of Tile Street, Girlington, denies one charge of murder.

Khan also denies a charge of violent disorder along with Mohammed Shaffi, 26, of Whetley Grove, Girlington; Yousaf Khan, also of Tile Street; Adelso Saws, 20, of Grange View, Chapletown, Leeds; and Mohammed Raja, 22, of Parkside Road, West Bowling.

Raja also denies one charge of robbery.

The hearing continues.
