CHRIS MELLING won a dramatic last frame to win a place in the quarter-final of the Embassy World 8-Ball Pool Championship.
The Keighley cue star beat the wizard from Oz, Quinten Hann, who was hot favourite to take the £10,000 first prize.
The confident Aussie looked to have the game in the bag as he knocked in a superb penultimate red and then doubled the last red to need only the eigh ball for victory. But the cue ball rebounded off a side cushion and hit his cue, giving Melling two visits to the table.
He cleaned up his yellows and slotted the black for an 8-7 victory.
Melling said: "I've never seen anything like that in a match before. I'll never complain about having a run of bad luck again."
The Keighley kid was a semi-finalist 12 months ago and looked out as he trailed 5-2 but then overheard Hann tell one of his mates: "It's only a matter of time before I beat him."
Melling said: "I thought: 'It's only a matter of time before I beat you mate'."
Chris was due to play fellow Yorkshireman Darren Appleton in the televised stages which started yesterday (Thursday) with the semi-finals due today and the final on Saturday.
The competition is due to be shown on Sky Television next month.
