The man who gunned down Dexter Coleman in cold blood was this afternoon jailed for life for his murder.

Safdar Khan, 23, of Tile Street, Bradford, was found guilty of murdering Dexter - whose real name was Dester, but was also known as X - outside the Young Lion Caf in Manningham in July last year.

Leeds Crown Court heard that the 26-year-old was shot as he ran from a 100-strong predominately Asian mob, armed with guns, swords, baseball bats, hammers and a machete.

Detectives said Mr Coleman was an innocent victim of the violence and had not been involved in earlier confrontations which sparked it.

After being shot, the Jamaican computer student had sought refuge in the Young Lion Caf but was trapped there as the mob surrounded it and attacked the building with bricks and stones.

They also rampaged through the neighbouring Tote Bookmakers, robbing it of £1,400.

Today, Safdar Khan, 23, of Tile Street, Girlington, was sentenced to life for murder and five years for violent disorder.

Mohammed Shaffi, 26, of Whetley Grove, Girlington, Adelso Saws, 20, of Grange View, Chapeltown, Leeds, and Mohammed Raja, 31, of Parkside Road, West Bowling, were all sentenced to five years for violent disorder. Raja received a concurrent sentence of five years for robbery. Yousuf Khan, 26, of Tile Street, Girlington, received three and a half years for violent disorder.

The court had heard that the violence had been sparked by an argument between Saws and a group of men in a pub two days earlier.

The violence had escalated and ended with Saws and Shaffi gathering the mob to attack the group of Afro-Caribbeans gathered outside the caf in Lumb Lane.

As they attacked the fleeing group, the mob hurled racist abuse at them.

Sentencing the men, the honourable Mr Justice Gregson said: "The maximum sentence for violent disorder is five years in prison. This is the most serious example of that offence. It was premeditated, it was racially motivated and it involved the use of every sort of weapon, including firearms."
