Paul Deacon is ready to prove he is no Origin Game stand-in tonight by stealing the show at Headingley.

The Bulls scrum-half aims to put one over eight of his Odsal team-mates by inspiring Lancashire to victory over Yorkshire in the Test trial.

Yorkshire's former Keighley Cougars coach Lee Crooks has picked an entire Bulls pack, with Leon Pryce at right wing and Paul Anderson on the bench.

But the spotlight will be on Oldham-born Deacon as he steps into the boots of injured St Helens ace Sean Long.

Deacon was left out by the Bulls for their 38-26 Super League defeat at Knowsley Road and his short-kicking game was missed.

Bulls assistant coach Karl Harrison said: "Maybe in hindsight we could have used Deaks somewhere although we felt we had more options with the four substitutes we picked and they all played well.

"But he is a real quality player and having already played Test-match rugby against Australia, has shown he can perform at this level."

Deacon will partner Warrington's Lee Briers after Lancashire skipper Iestyn Harris withdrew yesterday with a hamstring strain.

Red rose coach Andy Gregory said: "It gives a massive opportunity for two young lads in Paul and Lee to show us what they can do on the big stage. I've no qualms about them."

Deacon will need no introducing to the opposing pack - fellow Bulls Brian McDermott, Stuart Fielden, Jamie Peacock, Lee Radford, Lee Gilmour and Yorkshire skipper Jimmy Lowes.

Crooks is relishing the challenge of working with top talent as a break from Northern Ford Premiership strugglers York.
