Cardiff City have joined the hunt to sign Stuart McCall.

The promoted Welsh side want an old hand in midfield to mastermind their first season back in Division Two.

And Ninian Park sources say the Bradford City skipper, pictured, would fit the bill.

Cardiff owner Sam Hammam is keen to bring in a well-established name to signal his team's intentions, and could throw in a coaching role as an added attraction.

Cardiff boss Bobby Gould wants to sign six to seven players before next season and confirmed: "He is one of a number of names that have been mentioned."

Gould plans to unveil a mystery midfielder on Thursday. And although it will not be McCall, the former Wales chief believes that is the area of the team that most needs strengthening.

The Bantams are still hoping that McCall will agree to a one-year contract. But McCall, who is on holiday in Tenerife, is unhappy with being offered a 60 per cent drop in wages.

City have offered a testimonial match - possibly against his former club Rangers - as part of a new package and are waiting the outcome.

McCall's agent has confirmed that four other clubs are interested although he has denied any contact with former City assistant manager Stan Ternent at Burnley.
