A Bradford licensee fears rumours that BNP supporters were drinking in his pub on Saturday could make him a target for reprisals.

Kevin Davies, licensee of The Queen Pub, on Bridge Street, said his daughter, 19-year-old Sarah, who works behind the bar, had moved out to a nearby hotel, because she feared for her safety.

"My family live above the premises and they have been on edge ever since," said Mr Davies. "They have been in tears."

Mr Davies, 42, is married to Nicola, and they also have an eight-year-old daughter Amie. He has been licensee at The Queen for three-and-a-half years and experience told him to take precautions early on Saturday.

He said: "We boarded up the pub at 10am. Common sense told us there was going to be trouble.

"We had door security and searched people. If we did not know them we asked for identification.

"If they didn't have any identification we didn't let them in. We did not take sides. I keep my beliefs to myself but this is not a racist or a fascist pub.

"I don't want fascists to think they would be welcome here because they would not."

Dean Loynes, chairman of Bradford Inner City Licensing Association, said it was up to individual licensees to keep undesirables out of their pubs but if they felt threatened they should close their doors.

"All door security have to be registered and trained to BICLA standards, but they are not trained to face what happened on Saturday," he said.

"If there are any licensees concerned or who feel that safety is at risk they should close, because there is no way that police can respond to individual incidents.

"This should be a stark warning to anyone who allows any faction that is not the norm, like the BNP, to patronise their establishment, of the trouble that they can bring."

Some pubs out of the city centre were unable to protect themselves or their property against the angry mobs on Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday morning.

Arthur Midgely, who owns Arthur's Bar, in Heaton Road, and who is licensee of the nearby Junction Inn, was forced from his pub in the early hours of Sunday.

"A gang of youths gave us five minutes to get out before totally destroying the pub," he said.

"They also went into the Junction Inn, looting and drinking. The premises have been totally destroyed."
