Headley golfer Davids 'Indy' Indriks is going in search of an unusual treble in Europe later this month.

Indy will be defending his Latvian Open title aiming to make it three wins in a row in Riga from July 28-29.

But after that he plans to trek across Europe, carrying his golf clubs with him, and take part in the Czech Open from August 16-19 and - providing his funds don't run out - try for the Hungarian Open from August 29-September 1.

Indy, who for many years was one of Bradford's top table tennis players with Unity, only took up golf regularly four years ago.

Already he has built a reputation for being one of the most successful local players, despite

a bag with only two woods, four irons and a putter!

"I had to give up table tennis and my wife suggested I take up golf again," said the 35-year-old from Thornton.

"A neighbour was selling his clubs, so I bought them off him for £5. They are about 70 years old, but they do the job for me.

"I am now down to a two handicap and getting back to form in recent weeks after having trouble with torn cruciate knee ligaments.

"My knee kept collapsing on me over the past two years, but I had an operation about three months ago and my play is getting back to normal now.

"I have a lot of family in Latvia, which is where my father comes from, and I will be visiting them while I am over there. But I can't afford the air fares to Czechoslovakia and Hungary so I will be backpacking my was across Europe.

"The Latvian Open is sponsored by Volvo and there is a car as first prize, so you never know I could win the transport to get back!"

While in Riga he has been selected to play for a Latvian team against Estonia in a match he describes as 'a sort of mini War of the Roses clash'.

His Headley club is planning a whip round among members to give him financial backing and anyone else who can help out can contact Indy on 0771 8109770.
