HOPES were running high in towns and villages for today's summer round of the Yorkshire in Bloom competition.

Judges from the national contest were due back in the area today - and in towns and villages volunteers have been working hard to make their communities look their best.

On Sunday a town clean-up was organised in Otley with many turning out to play their part.

Otley in Bloom member Sylvia Reid, from Otley Chamber of Trade and Commerce, said: "We are really delighted with everyone's support throughout the year. The town's historic stone buildings, ginnels and courtyards are looking particularly attractive with floral hanging baskets, hayracks and tubs."

"One resident told me this week that she hadn't seen the town look so lovely for years."

Les Cross, Otley Town Council Clerk, said: "Otley's results in this year's spring judging were a great improvement on previous years.

"The work that has gone on since spring is a credit to everyone and the team is hopeful that the judges this summer will appreciate the colourful corners and yards."

A route for the judges next week is due to take in some of the projects taken on by the team such as Beech Hill, where planters have been placed, and Gas Board Corner, off Cambridge Street, where there has been a clean-up.

Mrs Reid added: "There is much to feel proud, of not least because of Otley's location which provides a wonderful context for the town. However, we should not feel complacent. Improving our environment is a key aim of the team.

"We believe that everyone benefits if the immediate surroundings are clean and attractive."

l Following the spring round of the judging, Otley was placed tenth out of 13 and Guiseley was second from bottom. Bramhope was joint fourth and Hawksworth was top in their sections.
