VILLAGERS may take part in a week-long 'Bramhope Festival' in celebration of the Queen's Golden Jubilee next year.

Bramhope Parish Council has been searching for ideas to mark the occasion, and hopes to tie in the annual Bramhope Show with drama performances, art displays and even a gymkhana, in August next year.

The week's festivities would culminate in the creation of a 'village portrait' at The Cross - a re-creation of a photograph taken in the village 100 years ago.

Chairman Colin Robertson said the council did not want to organise the full festival, but would like to encourage the village's groups to put on their own events in one week.

Although the Golden Jubilee itself falls in February, Councillor Clive Fox suggested recreating the village portrait - in which members of the community lined up for the camera - exactly 100 years on, in August.

Councillors suggested 18 different activities, including performances of A Midsummer Night's Dream by Bramhope Players, a mini book festival, a week-long art exhibition by Bramhope Art Club, music performed by Leeds College of Music or the Yorkshire Bach Choir

Other activities, such as guided tours of Bramhope, have been mooted to take place throughout the week.

And suggested sporting events include a tennis coaching masterclass, for which a professional player would be brought in, net coaching at Bramhope Cricket Club, and an archery event.

It is hoped to end the week with several events on a Saturday, including Bramhope Show, outdoor food and drink, another event or demonstration, and the centenary photograph.
