Lady Captain's

Day at Ilkley

Sally Ognall is to be congratulated on giving the ladies of Ilkley Golf Club such a good day on her Lady Captain's Day.

There must have been a lot of forethought, for it all ran

so smoothly making the day a huge success.

It was perhaps a little too hot for some of the 66 competitors; there was also a swirling wind creating a degree of difficulty.

Welcome refreshment was cheerfully and most efficiently dispensed at the half-way house by a suitably aproned Harry Ognall and his assistant Tony Webster.

Their barbecued spiced sausages were a treat, helped down with all manner of refreshing cold drinks so badly needed.

The ground staff and Charlotte from the clubhouse were there too lending their valuable support.

The competition was stroke play with Henrietta Wilman providing the winning score for the captain's prize with an excellent score of 73-5-68 just beating Linda Burton on the back nine, who also scored well with 90-22-68. The C.S.S. was 73.

The prizes were very tasteful pieces of silver. Both Henrietta and Linda made appropriate speeches thanking Sally for everything.

After prizegiving Pimm's, wine and canaps were offered. The early evening party went with a swing, and was made perfect by the ladies being able to sit on the veranda in warm sunshine and beautiful surroundings enjoying the convivial atmosphere which had prevailed throughout this special day.

Other results: Division One - G Bean 92-20-72, S Wood 87-15-72, S Holroyd 93-20-73. Division Two - L Burton 90-22-68, A Jackson 93-25-68, K French 103-33-70. Nearest the pin at the 13th hole - B Dale.

Julie Ormondroyd was the only lady to score a two; and Ilkley's long-standing member Queenie Fraser, an absolute wizard with the putter, won the putting prize.

The winner of the Ilkley Golf Club Ladies' July Medal, run in conjunction with the Hole-in-One Trophy for lady members who have achieved that, was M Bradley with 86-16-70. A Gillon took second place with 93-19-74 after a count back on the last nine holes from S Ognall. A Newman had the lowest gross of 79.

In Division Two the winner was J Cooper with a brilliant 98-32-66. Runner-up was D Cartwright with 97-22-75.

In matches the Scratch team trounced Moortown 5 and 2. The winners were M Brand, A Newman, L Brand and L Burrows. Henrietta Wilman and Liz Downs halved.

The B team lost away at Oakdale Golf Club in Harrogate 2 1/2-4 1/2. P Blackburn and M Mitchell won while Kath Pickles halved.

Bracken Ghyll

extended

course opens

The opening of the additional nine holes at Addingham's Bracken Ghyll Golf Club was marked by the holding of a Stableford Competition for the Walker Cup.

The competition was chosen to mark the event as it is open to all sections of the club playing off full handicaps and carries the name of John and Chloe Walker on whose land the club was formed.

The competition was keenly contested with the added spice of all the new problems and experiences that playing on a new course introduce.
