Mistakes were made as police tried to break up a 100-strong crowd that had been pelting them with sticks and stones on Bradford's Ravenscliffe estate, the city's magistrates heard.
Officers charged into one house and tried to drag a teenager outside, before being convinced that he was not part of the mob, said solicitor Andrew Walker.
After reporting restrictions were lifted, Mr Walker appealed for witnesses to Monday night's incident to come forward.
He said his client, John Adamson, 35, was caught up in the disturbance when he went out to ensure his partner's son returned safely from visiting a friend. Adamson was just standing there when he was thrown over a fence and beaten about the body and legs by police officers.
Adamson, of Thackeray Road, Ravenscliffe, was one of six men charged with violent disorder who were remanded in custody for a week. The others were: Gary Hirst, 20, and his brother, Paul, 19, both of Brassy Terrace, East Bowling; Ian Matthew Rajch, 18, of Westbrook Terrace, Batley; John Roy Broadley, 44, of Thackeray Road, Ravenscliffe; and David John Atkinson, 39, of Norbury Road, Ravenscliffe.
Stephen Uttley, prosecuting, alleged that Atkinson was seen shouting abusive language and Broadley had what was possibly a large stone in his raised hand.
Paul Hirst was seen dropping a missile while his brother "went quietly" after being arrested and Rajch was seen throwing a stone.
Christopher Bird, for Broadley, said his client was returning from a pub pool match when he became caught between two lines of police. Malcolm Christy, for the Hirsts, said they were visiting another brother when they were caught up in the action.
Alan Petherbridge, for Atkinson, said his client became angry when the police would not allow him to reach his house. Rajch, said Mr Petherbridge, was also caught up in the charge.
