Musicians, majorettes, mountain walkers and Muslim cricketers are among Keighley youngsters benefiting from the latest council cash hand-out. More than 20 groups in Keighley and Ilkley shared out £6,450 in grants from Keighley Area Panel's Community Chest.

Councillors have an annual budget of £21,200 and meet every three months to decide which projects and activities deserve funding.

Bids for up to £500 each come from a range of sporting, community, educational, cultural and entertainment groups.

Grants of £500 went to Keighley Scouts for mountain leader training, Keighley Women and Children's Centre for audio-visual equipment, Keighley Cricket Academy for a sports event, and Keighley Elderly Initiatives Group for an information day.

Sporting winners: Keighley and District Table Tennis League, coaching course £350; Young Stars Cricket Club, replacement equipment, £200; Keighley Volley Ball for Good Health Club, sport and health project, £190; Keighley Asian Sports Association, floodlit cricket, £200; Keighley Young Muslims Cricket Club, replacement equipment, £200; St Peter's Junior Table Tennis, equipment, £250.

Other grants: Keighley Comet Majorettes, annual majorette competition, £100; Keighley Music, classical concert, £160; Keighley Gala Queen committee, Court of Queens, £100; Rinkaghyn Music Group, special needs group, £500; East Morton Primary School, environmental garden project, £300; Alley Cats Over-50s Line Dance Club, music equipment, £300; Bangladeshi Community Association, community sports event, £400; Braithwaite and Guard House Community Association, paint, £150.
