Fundraisers at Manorlands are celebrating the sterling success of the hospice's silver jubilee garden party.

More than £18,000 was raised from the charity event at the Sue Ryder Care home on Sunday, £1,000 up on last year's garden party.

Crowds thronged the gardens of the Oxenhope hospice for the event, which was opened by BBC Look North presenter Ian White.

The chance to ride on the back of a Honda Goldwing supplied by Colin Appleyard, of Keighley, proved to be a roaring success with youngsters.

Coronation Street actor Peter Armitage, who plays Kevin Webster's dad Bill, also revved up plenty of interest by offering rides on his Harley Davidson.

Fundraiser Chris Bown said: "We had an excellent time and it was fantastic to see the place packed with people.

"We've had quite a bad year because of the disruption caused by foot and mouth, so to be £1,000 up on last year is a great effort.

"On the day we actually took £11,000, which included £1,000 just from donations on the gate.

"For the first time we had paintings donated by local art groups which we set up in a little art gallery. Members of the public really enjoyed looking at the paintings and the sale of paintings helped to raise another £800.

"We would like to say a big thankyou to everyone who helped us on the day, because without them we couldn't have got anywhere near that total."

Other attractions included a beat the goalie competition organised with the Boltmakers Arms football team, play your cards right, hook a duck, raffle and barbeque.

The only grey cloud on the day was the theft of a handbag and purse, which has left organisers sickened.

Chris added: "When people work so hard to raise so much money for a good cause this kind of thing is really despicable."
