A family of Lions were filled with pride this week when they took on a major role together.

Michael and Janet Walton, from Keighley, have become the first husband and wife team to take on the roles of vice-president and president of Keighley Lions Club.

They were invested together at a social evening at St Anne's Social Club, with Janet taking over the reins of the presidency from Avril Emmerson. And one of the first tasks that Janet had to perform was to induct daughter Michelle into the organisation.

The 19-year-old, who works for Knowles Estate Agents, is the youngest-ever member of Keighley Lions. Janet, 45, who is a dispenser at Moss Pharmacy, Ingrow, jokes that she will ensure the vice-president knows his place now that the tables have turned.

"I've already told Michael that he's got to do exactly as I tell him," said Janet. "It was a super night and if the good wishes I received are anything to go by it will be a good year.

"It's a really good atmosphere at the club and I've met a lot of friends there over the years. It's very rewarding for us, and the social side and friends you make are an added bonus."

Janet became a member of the Lions in 1999 but has supported Michael since he joined the club in 1989, and when he served as president from 1997-98.

Michael, 51, who works for Keighley and District Travel, said: "It's a very important role for Janet and one of the things that I'm conscious of not doing is overshadowing her."

Janet has chosen to help out the children's ward at Airedale Hospital during her year in office, and she is keen to carry on the group's other fundraising work.

The Lions Club is on the lookout for new members, and more information can be obtained by calling Edward Walters on 01535 632982 or Michael Walton on 01535 606538.
