Two years ago young mum Vivienne Baker was facing a lifetime of hospital visits and the uncomfortable dialysis treatment she needed to keep her alive after her kidneys failed.

But today she is back at work, planning to buy a house with her fiance and looking forward to her first-ever foreign holiday - thanks to her father John who donated one of his own kidneys to give her a new lease of life.

Later this month Vivienne, of Baildon, plans to celebrate the second anniversary of the successful transplant operation at St James's Hospital, Leeds.

They hope their success story will encourage more people to consider becoming kidney donors and carry organ donor cards.

Vivienne's father John Baker, 57, decided to become a donor after being unable to bear the sight of his daughter hooked up to a dialysis machine.

Two years on Vivienne, who has an 11-year-old son Gavin and is engaged to Simon Parker, 32, said: "I've just had a bit of an infection but apart from that I'm feeling very well. At the last check-up the doctors said the kidney was working fine.

"If it hadn't been for what my dad did I'd still be on loads of tablets and having dialysis three times a week - I'd be tired all the time, lethargic and have no real interest in doing anything.

"I'm still amazed at what he did for me, it was such a big thing. All I can say for now is thank you.

"There are so many people on dialysis and other forms of treatment who could benefit if there were more donors. I'd like to think that what's happened with us might encourage others to come forward.''
