The idea of a special "post riot" action meeting of Bradford businesses both large and small, proposed by Bradford Chamber of Commerce president-elect John Pennington, is an excellent one. The T&A is delighted to support it.

It is to be hoped that the meeting wins the participation of companies far beyond those which were directly involved in the riots. It could be vital to us all in various ways. The more minds which can be brought to bear on the problem, the greater the chances of finding a way out of the mess we have been plunged into.

The local economy has been badly damaged by the events of two weekends ago. Some businesses have been destroyed. Others have been undermined. A great deal of work needs to be done to rebuild them, both physically and in terms of confidence.

However, probably an even greater challenge is to restore Bradford's shattered image. This city needs inward investment. It needs new companies to come here bringing money and jobs. It needs existing companies to have the confidence to consolidate and expand.

At a time like this, it is important that we are all seen to be pulling together. This action meeting is a chance for businesses from every section of the community to set an example to the rest of Bradford in terms of co-operation and mutual support.

Those so far involved have already set out some of the measures they want to talk about. At the very least the meeting will be a morale booster. Hopefully, though, it will come up with positive ways for Bradford - all of Bradford - to move forward.
