Darryl Berry may have missed out on a place in today's Open Championship, but he is leading the way to be named top golfer in Bradford at the end of the year.
The West Bradford 22-year-old saw his chance of playing at Lytham slip away after a second round 71 at St Annes Old Links left him two over the qualifying mark.
But he has been the outstanding all-round player in Bradford competitions so far this year and has an eight-point lead in the race for the T&A Trophy.
Berry, who won the title two years ago, has a perfect record of three wins for the Bradford Union team in the Yorkshire League, was runner-up in the 36-hole amateur championship and has ten points in the Scratch League.
Altogether he has picked up a total of 30 once the six points are added from reaching the quarter-finals in the Yorkshire amateur championship at Alwoodley.
Nearest challengers are 36-hole champion Mark Evans, also from West Bradford, and Bradford Moor's Neil Harker-Bell, who both have 22.
Last year's winner Gareth Evans, from Northcliffe, has plenty to do to mount a challenge as he currently trails by 13 points.
The finish could be close because there are still plenty of points to play for with four more Scratch League fixtures, the Bradford Open, three Inter-Union matches, the Bradford matchplay, First Division team championship and Yorkshire Inter-District team championship still to come.
Two points are awarded for Scratch League and Inter-Union victories with a sliding scale according to finish positions in other main competitions.
