Young Lizzie is Yorkshire
champion
Lizzie Brand, Ilkley Golf Club's talented junior, played in the Challenge Bowl at Otley Golf Club last week. She was joint third qualifier with a net 69 and was unfortunate to be knocked out of the first round of matches by an eventual finalist. It was an admirable effort by a 13 year-old.
Two days later Lizzie went to Shipley Northcliffe to play in the Yorkshire Schools' Championships. In difficult windy weather, and won the event with a net 73. Her handicap is now 19.
The Ilkley Golf Club Ladies' Hartley Veterans' Trophy was won by Jackie Foster with 91-22-69. Sue Black was second on 94-21-73 and Joyce Bennett was third with 96-23-73.
The lowest gross in this competition was Sue Wood on 88.
Ilkley fielded an elite team of golfers in their scratch match against Rotherham, and were delighted to beat them 51/2-11/2 despite the fact that their opponents came complete with caddies 'et al'.
The winners were H Wilman, A Newman, L Brand, F Wood, and E Downs while M Brand halved. Altogether an excellent result against last year's inter-club champions.
