Bradford Council's Labour Group has formally attacked Keighley MP Ann Cryer for her comments in the wake of the Bradford Race Review.
The 40-plus strong group this week voted in favour of a motion condemning her call for stricter immigration rules for those entering the UK unable to speak English and ideas for reforms in the Asian community.
No one from the Labour group would be named in connection with the motion but leader Ian Greenwood (pictured) said: "We believe Ann is wrong in her analysis and shouldn't have said it."
But a Bradford Labour insider says Mrs Cryer's comments have offended the community and those who elected her.
The insider calls her comments "pub politics" not based on any accurate facts or figures and adds: "That coming from an MP in an area where there have been tensions in the last few months is irresponsible and quite dangerous.
"My big worry is whether the whole thing becomes a cause clbre for those whose interest is not good race relations.
"So much of my hard work and other people's hard work has been undermined.
"To finally get a Labour MP and for them to let you down is disappointing."
Mrs Cryer this week issued a statement reaffirming comments she made in the House of Commons . It is printed in full on page 4
l Keighley immigration expert and former chairman of the now defunct Racial Equality Council Zafar Ali was another dissenting voice this week.
He says: "Ann Cryer's comments have shocked me - especially as they have come from a member of a Labour government.
"I've met a number of people who've showed their anger and resentment.
"At the moment we're going through a serious time with BNP activities. We're working really hard together to make sure Keighley does not suffer.
"I think a statement like that can only fuel the BNP to go on with it. We don't want to play into their hands."
